It’s a cliche, but I’m honored just to be nominated. Some of my favoite blogs are also up for awards, like Debby Kaspari’s Drawing the Motmot and OVAC’s excellent blog. Vote by February 14!

The 12 Fellows for the first Oklahoma Art Writing & Curatorial Fellowship have been announced. I can’t wait to get started!

There’s an article in the Journal Record today about the Fellowship, plus a photo of me looking downright respectable in my studio. Snip:

The fellows selected for the program will be matched with mentors ranging from a curator in Cleveland, Ohio, to an art critic in New York City to an art professor from Fort Worth, Texas. Mentors and fellows will work together on contemporary art writing, and mentors will guide their fellows on a final project. The public can be part of the process at three panel discussions scheduled for February, March and September at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

Tishimingo “Mingo” Yale teaches pilates. On weekends, weather permitting, she has a roadside fish fry stand. Bass fishermen stop there on their way back from Lake Goodnight.
Mingo came to fitness instruction in her mid-forties, after years of wearing high-heeled shoes had all but ruined her spine. At the urging of her chiropractor, Mingo took up yoga. The improvements in her health were so significant she decided she must help bring this lifestyle to others.

The final painting, which you can see here, was created using the acrylic gel transfer process detailed here and here.

You can see Mingo in person at Legacy Bank in Edmond through January 2010.

Here’s a fun game to play in the car: When you pass a road sign that has two town names on it, pretend they are the first and last names of a person. Invent a personality to go with that name. Who is this person? Where did they come from? What do they do for a living? What are their hobbies? Sarah Atlee has played this game enough to populate an entire imaginary community.

“Normal, OK is a fictional construct, a place in my head, based on real places around me,” says Atlee. “In Normal, everyone has a second job, a quiet dream, a lost love, or a former life. Normal is a town of entrepreneurs, artists, upstanding citizens, troublemakers, friends, and a few enemies. I hope you enjoy your visit.”

12×12 Art Show & Sale 2009

Featuring 150 of Oklahoma’s finest artists, delectable food from 26 area restaurants, panoramic views of the OKC skyline, live music and cash bar.

The 12×12 Art Show & Sale is the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s only fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting the organization’s many programs to support visual artists in the state of Oklahoma.

Music from The Stringents, a rock string quartet, and the Millwood Drum Line.

A preview of artwork is online now and images will be added weekly. You can also view some of the artwork during a preview exhibition in the Lobby of Leadership Square, 211 N Robinson in OKC, September 1-20.

Artist Proposal Writing Workshop – Art 365 & Momentum Spotlight

Learn the basics of writing a project proposal. Proposal deadlines are approaching for the $60,000 in Art 365 awards & exhibition and the $5,250 in Momentum Spotlight awards. For each, the same elements are required: description of project, images, artist statement, and resume.

Past Art 365 artist Liz Roth will present, offering tips about what makes a successful proposal. An OVAC representative will answer questions about the specific opportunities of Art 365 and Momentum Spotlight.

Workshops are open to all artists interested in improving their proposal writing techniques.
